Upon Completing a Terrible Task

In a time rarely remembered
Outside she sat quietly sobbing
With summer days grabbed by September
A little heart that kept on throbbing,
She gazed at children on the bars
Distracted by the laughs she heard
Looking for the moments to be hers
Closed her ears to every word,
She tried and tried,
The loops didn’t follow
She wanted only but to ride
The slide, before seeing tomorrow
Or just to hop on the pavement side to side.
With arms folded, stubborn eyes
She kicked the leaves in time for when
Frustration hit without surprise
To find the shoe untied again
She thought, I must not waste another minute
Bit her lip, picked up the pace
This is my battle, I shall win it
Crossing the bunny loops of lace
Ran to the teacher yelling, “I did it!
That moment she could not replace.
Her eyes welled up, “you’re just in time;
That tie looks splendid!”
By the door kids formed a line
She knew that recess had just ended.
